Bayern Munich ready to rival Arsenal for top target

Bayern Munich are interested in a deal to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao as the club plot to sign a new winger.

Williams was on the radar of Europe’s elite clubs last summer after starring during Spain’s success at Euro 2024. The 22-year-old turned down transfer interest to recommit his future to Athletic Bilbao but is expected to again receive considerable interest this summer.

On Thursday, Williams scored twice against Roma to book Athletic’s place in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Arsenal have made Williams a top target for the summer window as incoming sporting director Andrea Berta plans a raid on La Liga. Williams is one of several Spanish-based targets, alongside Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia and Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

However, Sky Germany are reporting that Bayern Munich will rival Arsenal for Williams. The German giants want to sign at least one new winger amid doubts over the immediate futures of Kingsley Coman. Serge Gnabry, Bryan Zaragoza and Leroy Sane.

Williams is on the club’s shortlist of potential additions, alongside Borussia Dortmund’s England u-21 Jamie Gittens. Lyon winger Rayan Cherki is another under consideration, with the Bavarians gathering the required information.

Williams is expected to be available for a fee in the region of €50m (£42m), though the level of Bayern’s interest will depend on the outcome of their pursuit of Florian Wirtz. The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder is the club’s number one priority for the summer but could cost in excess of €100m.
