Chelsea face a wait to find out extent of Chilwell’s potentially season ending injury

Chelsea face a nervous wait to discover the extent of Ben Chilwell’s potentially season-ending knee injury.

Chilwell was substituted during the 4-0 win over Juventus at Stamford Bridge, with fears that the England international has sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage, a scenario that could see the wing-back miss the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old underwent a scan on Wednesday and could require surgery, though Chelsea are prepared to allow the injury time to heal naturally before sending Chilwell for a second scan, when it will be decided whether an operation is required.

The Telegraph are reporting that Chilwell will not feature again this year even in a ‘best-case scenario’ for the European champions, who face a nervous wait to find out whether surgery is needed.

Chilwell’s absence will be a major blow to Thomas Tuchel’s side with the wing-back having been in excellent form so far this season, scoring three goals and providing an assist in his six Premier League appearances.

Marcos Alonso – who started the season in the Chelsea side after Chilwell endured a difficult summer with England – will fill the void at left wing-back, whilst Saul Niguez could provide further cover after previously featuring in the position for Atletico Madrid.
