Conte confirms Covid-19 outbreak at Spurs with eight first-team players positive

Antonio Conte has confirmed that Tottenham have had eight first-team players test positive for Covid-19, with a further five staff members having also contracted the virus.

Spurs are dealing with a major outbreak of positive cases ahead of the club’s fixtures with Rennes and Brighton this week, with testing having revealed a Premier League record number of positive results at the club.

The north Londoners cancelled Conte’s press-conference with the Italian addressing the media through Zoom and Conte has now confirmed the severity, describing the outbreak as a ‘serious’ problem.

Speaking to the media, Conte said: “Every day, we are having more positives.

“Everyone is a bit scared. People have families. Why [do] we have to take the risk? This is my question.

“Today, two positives. And tomorrow, who? Me? I don’t know. Better me than a player for sure but I think it’s not right for everyone. We have contact with our families”.

The BBC are reporting that the club’s fixture with Rennes is schedule to go ahead as planned according to UEFA, though Spurs’ clash with Brighton in the Premier League could come under review.

Spurs saw two fixtures postponed in the Premier League last season, with games against against Fulham and Aston Villa rescheduled following a number of positive cases amongst their opponents’ squads.
