Rangnick: ‘Too early’ to think about January transfers as he discusses Paul Pogba return

Ralf Rangnick says it is ‘too early’ to discuss the January transfer window and potential signings at Manchester United.

Rangnick will oversee the Red Devils on an interim basis until the end of the current campaign, with the German having guided the side to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace during his first fixture in charge last weekend.

The 63-year-old will move into an advisory role at the end of the season and could have an influence on recruitment, with the former RB Leipzig coach asked about potential incomings at the club as the winter window opens next month.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s trip to Norwich, Rangnick insisted his focus is on his current squad and says it is ‘too early’ to discuss what may happen in the January window.

“I have got to know them [the players] better, I’ve seen most of them play in two games but still to early to speak about what might happen in transfer window,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“It is a big squad. We have to make sure players want to stay here. Loan might make sense for some but it is still too early to talk about that.”

Dean Henderson has been linked with a loan exit after failing to dislodge David de Gea as number one, whilst Anthony Martial is understood to be keen on leaving the club with his agent having revealed his desire to secure regular first-team football.

The future of Jesse Lingard also remains unclear, the midfielder having failed to sign a new deal and out of contract at Old Trafford next summer.

The German also opened up on the return of Paul Pogba to the first team picture, the Frenchman currently out of action through injury, suggesting he could return to action in around a month.

“We spoke on the phone two days ago, no I think it was on Tuesday [three days ago]…” he added.

“He’s still in Dubai and is due to come back today and then we’ll get to know each other in person on Sunday but we had a telephone call for about 10-15 minutes.

“He told me that he was getting better but obviously not being fully fit. From what I’ve heard so far, it’ll take another couple of weeks until he’s fit for training again.

“Then, of course, he has been out for quite some time. I suppose it will take him another couple of weeks to get him match fit but in the first instance it’s important for him to become fully fit, to be able to train with the rest of the group and then we have to develop him physically and tactically to be also fit to play in the Premier League.”
