Steven Gerrard has admitted vaccination status could affect transfers for Aston Villa and other Premier League clubs ahead of the January transfer window.
The rising cases of Covid-19 have disrupted the Premier League calendar in recent days, with Tuesday’s fixture between Manchester United and Brentford the latest to be postponed following a record number of positive results in the latest round of testing.
Gerrard has discussed the impact of the pandemic and the vaccination process, admitting that Villa could reconsider prospective signings who have not been vaccinated.
“We’re very thorough and detailed in terms of our recruitment process, and we look at everything, so I’m sure it’ll come up,” Gerrard said at his pre-match press conference. “It would certainly come into conversations in the background.
“We’ll obviously make decisions as and when we decide a certain person is the one who could come in and make us better. We’ll go across it with a fine-toothed comb. But I don’t think it’s right for me to comment on if I would or wouldn’t [sign the player] in that situation [if they were unvaccinated].”
Gerrard, speaking ahead of this evening’s clash with Norwich, revealed that two Aston Villa players and two staff members were positive with Covid at present, but confirmed the majority of his squad were double vaccinated.
