Arsenal remove Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as club captain

Arsenal have removed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as club captain following the forward’s disciplinary breach last week.

Aubameyang was omitted from the north London side’s squad for the 3-0 win over Southampton last weekend, with Mikel Arteta confirming the Gabon international was absent due to a disciplinary breach.

Arsenal have confirmed the decision to strip the 32-year-old of the captaincy in a club statement, whilst also confirming that the star will not be considered for selection for tomorrow’s Premier League clash with West Ham.

“We expect all our players, particularly our captain, to work to the rules and standards we have all set and agreed,” the club statement said.

“We are fully focused on tomorrow’s match.”

Mikel Arteta will address the media at a pre-match press conference later this afternoon, where the Spaniard will be asked on Aubameyang’s future and the Gunners’ next captain.

Aubameyang was named as captain by former manager Unai Emery before retaining the role under Arteta, having inherited the armband from Granit Xhaka after the Switzerland midfielder was also stripped of the armband.
