David Moyes says West Ham are trying to ‘catch the teams above’ them as he prepares for his 600th game as a Premier League manager.
Moyes will bring up the landmark moment as West Ham face Arsenal in the Premier League tomorrow, with the Hammers having enjoyed an excellent start to the season to sit fourth in the division.
The 58-year-old has spoken at his pride at reaching 600 games in the Premier League and discussed West Ham’s ambitions for the season, with the East Londoners currently ahead of tomorrow’s opponents in the table.
Moyes says West Ham are not currently looking over their shoulders and instead aiming to ‘catch’ the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.
“It’s a big thing. 600 games in the Premier League is a fair achievement, and the names are well known and successful as manager, so I hope I can continue trying to be successful at whatever level we’re at,” Moyes told his pre-match press conference.
“We’re in a strong position and will try to stay there as long as we can. We’re not looking back – we’re trying to see if we can catch the teams above us – but we’re well aware of the strength of the teams above us.
“There’ll be different times in the season when your form’s better than others, but hopefully we’ll come out of the Christmas period in good shape.”
Moyes discussed his side’s strong record against the Premier League’s leading clubs this season, having already secured wins against Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United across all competitions this term.
The Hammers’ boss admits his side are ‘ahead of schedule’ in their development, but is keen for his team to retain their place near the top of the division.
“We’ve wanted to try and be organised against teams who are good with the ball and used to winning.
“We’re still in the process of trying to build a squad and team that can be competitive really.
“At the moment, we’re a little bit ahead of schedule of where we should be, but now we’re here we’re not going to give it up.
“We’re going to keep pushing and I have to say there’s been a lot of good things the players have done. There are other teams coming to us now who are making it harder to score against and that’s part of becoming a big team, other teams will try hard to stop you.”
