Premier League clubs are considering following Bayern Munich’s stance and fining unvaccinated footballers who are forced to miss fixtures or training as a result of self-isolation.
Bayern Munich last month fined five players for each game or day of training missed as a result of isolation, after coming into contact with a person positive for Covid-19.
Unvaccinated players are required to undergo a period of self-isolation should they come into contact with a person who has tested positive for the virus, regardless of whether they themselves subsequently test negative.
With concerns over the new Omicron variant and rising cases, the Mail are reporting that Premier League clubs are considering following Bayern’s stance and punishing unvaccinated players who are forced to miss football in the coming months.
There remains a reluctance amongst some sections of the Premier League to take the vaccine and clubs are said to be looking into the legalities of fining unvaccinated players who miss games or training. However, any move would likely be met with opposition from the Professional Footballers’ Association.
The latest information on vaccination rates – published in October – revealed 68% of Premier League players were fully vaccinated against Covid-19, though there are at least three clubs in the division yet to reach 50% for those to have taken the jab.
Leeds, Brentford and Wolves are the confirmed clubs to have their entire first-team squads double vaccinated.
Spurs recently saw their league game against Brighton postponed due to an outbreak at the club, while Manchester United have also been forced to postpone their trip to Brentford.
