Newcastle are ‘getting closer’ to agreeing a deal to sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.
Newcastle are working on a deal to bring the England international back to the Premier League, with the Magpies’ new ownership keen to invest during the January transfer window as the club look to move away from the relegation places.
Eddie Howe is in search of defensive reinforcements with no club having conceded more goals than Newcastle in the Premier League this season, the side having won just one of their opening 19 games to remain mired in the division’s bottom three.
Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Newcastle are ‘getting closer’ to an agreement with Atletico, with Trippier prioritising a return to England have two-and-a-half seasons in the Spanish capital.

The 31-year-old – who was subject of interest from Manchester United last summer – signed for Atletico from Tottenham in 2019 and has since made 83 appearances across all competitions for the La Liga side.
Trippier formed part of the side crowned as Spanish champions last season and has remained a key figure under Diego Simeone, but is now interested in returning to the Premier League and joining Newcastle’s ambitious project.
The Magpies are hopeful of strengthening their backline having used the likes of Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie as auxiliary full-backs this season, whilst the club are also believed to be interested in a deal for Lille centre-back Sven Botman.
Botman has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising defenders since signing for Lille in 2020, impressing as the club won a shock Ligue 1 title last season.
