Everton have made ‘no approach’ for Wayne Rooney despite speculation linking him with the club’s vacant managerial position.
Everton have been linked with a move for Rooney following the club’s decision to sack Rafael Benitez on Sunday, with the Toffees’ former forward having impressed during his spell in charge of Derby County.
Rooney has guided the Rams off the bottom of the Championship within eight points of safety, despite the club being hit with a 21-point deduction for entering administration and historical financial breaches.
A fans group, Rams Trust, held a meeting with Derby’s administrators on Thursday evening and discussed the possibility of Rooney’s departure, but revealed that there has been no approach from Everton and that any succession plans are ‘hypothetical’ at present.
“The administrators have not, to date, considered the eventuality of Wayne Rooney leaving DCFC,” the minutes of the meeting reads.
“It is believed that the club would be able to seek a replacement from outside the club, and would receive special dispensation to do so, but it is not a point that has been discussed.
“It is hypothetical only because Wayne Rooney is committed to DCFC and there has been no approach from Everton or anyone else.”
Duncan Ferguson will take charge of Everton’s upcoming run of fixtures, starting with the club’s clash with Aston Villa in the Premier League tomorrow.
