Deal off: Newcastle’s bid for Lingard ‘dead’

Newcastle’s bid to sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United is now ‘dead’ after the club failed to agree a deal for the midfielder.

Newcastle had hoped to sign Lingard on loan for the remainder of the season and were prepared to pay the player’s wages in full, but a disagreement over the loan fee between the clubs has seen the deal break down.

Lingard had been keen on a loan move to Newcastle after a frustrating period at Old Trafford, with the England international having failed to start a Premier League fixture this season.

West Ham – who signed Lingard on loan last season – and Tottenham had also expressed an interest in the 29-year-old, but the Red Devils were reluctant to allow the midfielder to leave for a direct rival for Champions League football.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and favoured a loan move to the Magpies, allowing him to keep his options open as he prepares to become a free agent this summer.

Sky Sports are reporting that Lingard has no intention of remaining at Manchester United, but Newcastle will now move on to alternative targets as the club look to strengthen in the final days of the January window.

Eddie Howe’s side have already secured the signings of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, though remain keen to add a midfielder and centre-back before Monday’s deadline.
