Spurs open talks for in-demand Porto forward Diaz

Tottenham have opened talks to sign Luis Diaz from Porto with the North Londoners having submitted an offer of €55m (£46m) for the winger.

Antonio Conte is keen to add to his squad before the transfer window’s deadline on Monday and Spurs’ opening bid for Diaz is understood to be worth an initial €45m (£37.6m) with a further €10m (£8.4m) in performance-related add-ons.

Diaz has been linked with several leading European clubs following his fine performances in Portugal, with the Colombia international having scored 14 goals in just 18 league appearances for Porto so far this season.

Sky Sports are reporting that Porto are demanding a fee of around €60m (£50.2m) for Diaz, who has also been linked with Liverpool this month.

Spurs will now look to find a compromise with the Portuguese side and conclude a deal before the closure of the winter window next week, as Conte looks to reinforce his attacking options and the club’s pursuit of a top-four finish.

Diaz signed for Porto from Colombian side Club Junior in 2019 and has grown in influence in recent seasons, with the 25-year-old starring during last summer’s Copa America after finishing as the tournament’s joint-leading scorer alongside Lionel Messi.

He has reached double figures for goals in each of his three seasons with Porto, but has reached new levels in terms of goalscoring this term and is second for goals scored in Portugal’s top division, behind Benfica’s Darwin Nunez.

Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund are amongst the clubs to have monitored his progress of late, but Spurs will now look to finalise a deal in what could be a busy end to the January window.

Conte is also hopeful of signing Adama Traore from Wolves, whilst the North London side are also seeking additions in midfield.
