Arsenal confirm Aubameyang exit ahead of Barcelona move

Arsenal have confirmed the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with the striker set to join Barcelona.

Aubameyang has not featured for Arsenal since being stripped of the club captaincy last month and the North Londoners were keen to move the forward on following his recent exile at the Emirates.

Arsenal have now confirmed that they have agreed to  to terminate Aubameyang’s contract ‘by mutual constant’, the 32-year-old free complete a move to the Camp Nou in a deal that will save the Gunners around £25m in wages.

As for the striker, he is understood to have taken a significant financial cut in order to facilitate the move, given Barcelona’s financial situation.

The Gabon international will become Barcelona’s third signing from the Premier League this month, having earlier completed deals for Ferran Torres and Adama Traore as the club look to strengthen their attacking options.

Aubameyang signed for Arsenal in a £56m deal from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018 and scored 92 goals in 163 appearances for the Gunners, including netting twice in the final as he captained the side to FA Cup success in 2020.

Aubameyang’s exit comes despite Arsenal’s failure to sign a centre-forward in January, with the club possessing just Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as senior options across the remainder of the season.
