Klopp tempers expectations over Luis Diaz impact and discusses Fabio Carvalho interest

Jurgen Klopp has tempered expectations surrounding Luis Diaz following the winger’s arrival at Liverpool in January, and has discussed the club’s interest in Fulham’s Fabio Carvalho.

Liverpool secured the signing of Diaz from Porto in the closing stages of the transfer window, securing a deal worth an initial £37.5m after bringing forward a planned summer move for the Colombian.

The 25-year-old will soon link up with his new teammates after international duty, but Klopp has sought to temper expectations and says the exciting arrival – who has scored 14 goals in 18 league appearances for Porto this season – will take time to adapt to the Premier League.

“We’re really happy and excited about the signing,” Klopp said at his press conference ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup fourth round tie with Cardiff tomorrow.

“If he would come, step on the pitch and play his absolute best that would be strange. He needs time.

“He’s not at the training ground. It’s a really good sign we work on all fronts to improve this team. We have to be successful now and in the future.”

Liverpool also saw a late move for Fulham midfielder Carvalho fall through on deadline day, having agreed a fee with the Championship side for the teenager.

The 19-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and Klopp confirmed that the Reds are still interested in pursuing a deal for the England youth international.

“I don’t know,” Klopp said on the possibility of a summer deal for Carvalho.

“We are still interested – it would be crazy if we were not. It was late before the window closed so it didn’t work out so we will see what happens.”
