Jurgen Klopp says the current Liverpool squad is the ‘strongest’ he has ever managed as the Reds continue to compete on four fronts this season.
Liverpool face Leicester in the Premier League on Thursday evening as the club look to close the gap on league leaders Manchester City, having secured progress in the FA Cup with a fourth round win over Cardiff last weekend.
Klopp’s side will also resume their Champions League campaign against Inter Milan later this month, whilst the Reds are also in contention for the first major silverware of the season as a Carabao Cup final date with Chelsea looms on February 27.
Liverpool reinforced their squad with the signing of Luis Diaz from Porto in the January transfer window and the return of Harvey Elliott from injury has further enhanced Klopp’s options ahead of the business end of the season.
The Reds’ boss believes the current squad is the strongest he has ever managed after seeing Liverpool successfully navigated a hectic festive period.
“It’s the first time in my life I’ve been in this position because in Germany we only have three competitions – two plus the Champions League,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference.
“This is the strongest squad, there is no doubt about that. If that wasn’t the case then that means that we have got weaker over the years.
“We’ve always had a strong squad. That we didn’t make it so far in four competitions in the years before is for a bunch of different reasons. Timing is important in football, as in life, and when you come through a brilliant December on three wheels, for example, then it gets a bit bumpy in January when the cup competitions start properly.”
