Ralf Rangnick has provided an update on the fitness of Edinson Cavani and has confirmed the forward will miss Manchester United’s clash with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
United resume their Champions League campaign with a trip to face the Spanish champions tomorrow evening, as the Red Devils look to secure a positive first leg result in their last-16 tie.
Rangnick’s side will head into the contest after back-to-back wins over Brighton and Leeds, having secured a 4-2 win over the latter in an entertaining contest at Elland Road on Sunday.
Ahead of the clash Rangnick has provided an update on his squad and confirmed Cavani will once again be absent, the 35-year-old having missed the club’s past three league fixtures with a groin issue.
Rangnick revealed that the Uruguayan is still struggling with the problem and has not yet returned to training, with the German set to take a patient approach with Cavani’s recovery.
“Edinson [Cavani] will not be part of the group,” said Rangnick at his pre-match press conference.
“He has not been training for the last couple of weeks. He has a problem with his groin.
“As long as he doesn’t feel able to sprint, it doesn’t make sense to push him.”
