Romelu Lukaku reportedly wants to return to Inter Milan with the forward ‘not happy’ with his role at Chelsea.
Lukaku has endured a difficult season since signing for Chelsea in a £97.5m club record deal last summer, with the Belgium international having scored just 10 goals in all competitions during a frustrating campaign.
The 28-year-old has failed to find his role in Thomas Tuchel’s system and the German has admitted he is unsure on how to get the best from Lukaku, who set an unwanted Premier League record after managing just seven touches in the club’s win over Crystal Palace last weekend.
That anonymous showing saw Lukaku record the fewest touches in a single top-flight game for a player to feature for at least 90 minutes since Opta started collecting data in 2003/04.
Gazetta dello Sport are reporting that Lukaku is now keen to leave Chelsea and return to Italy, having made headlines earlier in the campaign following a controversial interview with Italian media.
The Belgian’s comments included expressing a desire to one day return to Inter Milan, who he helped fire to the Serie A title last season during a prolific period at the San Siro.
Lukaku scored 64 goals in just 95 appearances across his two seasons with the Nerazzurri and was named as Serie A’s Most Valuable Player following his role in the club’s drought-breaking Scudetto success last season.
The report has claimed that Lukaku would be willing to take a pay cut in order to facilitate the move, having signed a lucrative contract following his record arrival at Stamford Bridge.
