UEFA are ‘seeking clarification’ on whether Chelsea’s latest sanctions will impact future Champions League fixtures.
The European Union has announced sanctions on Russian owner Roman Abramovich, after a series of sanctions were also announced by the UK government last week amid the 55-year-old’s alleged ties to Vladimir Putin.
Chelsea have been permitted to operate under a special licence in the UK, though no such arrangement has been announced by the EU.
According to the Times, there is now uncertainty surrounding Chelsea’s future fixtures in Europe and UEFA are in discussions with the EU over the ramifications of the imposed sanctions.
Tonight’s Champions League last-16 fixture with Lille is set to go ahead as planned, having been arranged and budgeted for before Tuesday’s announcement.
However, complications could arise should Chelsea progress to the quarter-finals with the Premier League side 2-0 up on aggregate ahead of the return leg in France this evening.
Chelsea were named as one of four “associated entities” of Abramovich’s in the EU ruling, alongside steel manufacturer the Evraz Group, Evraz Holdings and Millhouse Capital.
