Tuchel on five-man shortlist for Man Utd job

Thomas Tuchel is on Manchester United’s five-man shortlist to become the club’s next manager with the Red Devils ‘monitoring’ the current situation at Chelsea.

Tuchel has emerged as a potentially viable candidate for the role given the uncertainty at Chelsea, following the government sanctions placed on Russian owner Roman Abramovich.

The German is contracted to Chelsea until 2024 and has confirmed he will remain with the west Londoners until the end of the season at least, with Chelsea currently operating under a special licence which runs until May 31.

The Guardian are reporting that Tuchel has impressed the hierarchy at Old Trafford, having won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup since arriving into English football. The 48-year-old has also reached both domestic cup finals at Chelsea and has previous silverware experience with Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

Tuchel is joined on the Red Devils’ shortlist by Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag, with the duo having long been considered the frontrunners for the role.

Pochettino is under pressure after Paris Saint-Germain’s capitulation at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League’s last 16, whilst Ten Hag’s Ajax side also crashed out of the competition after defeat to Benfica this week.

Spain manager Luis Enrique is also under consideration, though a move for the former Barcelona boss would likely have to wait until after the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

Julen Lopetegui – the current manager of Sevilla – is the fifth name in the frame for the position.
