Luis Enrique remains a ‘real contender’ for the Manchester United job despite the complications surrounding the winter World Cup.
Enrique is on a final shortlist of names to take the vacant role at Manchester United, but a pursuit of the Spain manager is complicated given his preference to remain with La Roja until after the Qatar World Cup, which begins in November.
Enrique’s stance is described as a ‘stumbling block’, though the Mail are reporting that the 51-year-old remains a ‘real contender’ for the position despite United’s preference for an appointment ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag and Julen Lopetegui remain in the frame for the position, though Enrique is an attractive candidate given the Red Devils would not have to pay a big money to prise him from his current role.
Enrique previously spent three seasons in charge of Barcelona and enjoyed huge success, winning two La Liga titles and the Champions League at the Camp Nou.
He also led Spain to the semi-finals of Euro 2020 last summer, despite being accused of anti-Madrid bias after failing to select any Real Madrid players in his final squad.
Enrique’s appointment would likely not be welcome news for David de Gea, however, with the United goalkeeper having been completely left out of the recent Spanish squad despite some impressive performances for his club.
