‘It’s not like us’ – Tuchel discusses Chelsea’s concerning drop in form

Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea’s recent defensive form has been unusual as the west Londoners look to bounce back at Southampton this weekend.

Chelsea will be looking to find their form after consecutive losses to Brentford and Real Madrid when the Blues travel to face Southampton this weekend, with the manner of those defeats having raised questions at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel’s side were beaten 4-1 at home to Brentford in the Premier League last weekend, losing to the Bees for the first time since 1939, before losing to a Karim Benzema-inspired Real Madrid in the Champions League’s quarter-finals in midweek.

Chelsea’s conceding of seven goals in two games is a stark contrast to the defensive strength that has been associated with Tuchel’s tenure as manager and the German insists his side are keen to put things right at St Mary’s on Saturday.

“We are aware of it and we don’t like it,” said Tuchel at his pre-match press conference.

“I wouldn’t say we are concerned but it’s not typical of us. We are trying to figure out how we can improve and we have to stop this directions as soon as possible.

“The best option is tomorrow. It’s not like us to defend like this and concede so many goals. We didn’t see it coming because it was not the case before the international break, which is why it is not as easy to deal with because there is no pattern.”
