Jurgen Klopp says the consistency Manchester City and Liverpool have shown in recent seasons is ‘crazy’ as the Premier League’s top two meet this weekend.
Liverpool travel to face the league leaders at the Etihad on Sunday, with just a point separating the two teams as the duo go head-to-head for the Premier League title once again.
The two teams have shared each of the past four Premier League titles to build a very modern rivalry, setting new standards with a series of record-breaking league campaigns.
Ahead of their latest clash, Klopp hailed the consistency both sides have shown in recent seasons when asked if City and Liverpool is now the greatest rivalry of the Premier League era.
“The consistency both teams have shown over the period is crazy. The closer we get the more likely you can overtake but we know it’s tough,” he told his pre-match press conference.
“What has changed in the four years is everybody else thinks it’s tough when they face us and that’s really good.”
Klopp was asked if the title rivals have brought the best out of the other and thinks a ‘strong opponent’ has allowed both clubs to reach new levels.
“Probably. If you play professional football at the highest level, the focus is on your games.
“In sport, I think what helps the most is a strong opponent. In the long term, especially. I think Nadal and Federer enjoyed the rivalry they had. That’s how it is in sport.
“I wouldn’t say I’m thankful City is that good, but it didn’t harm our development.”
