Pochettino ‘edging closer’ to PSG exit but would be ‘obvious’ choice to potentially replace Conte at Spurs

Mauricio Pochettino is ‘edging closer’ to an exit from Paris Saint-Germain and would be an ‘obvious’ choice to potentially replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham.

Pochettino’s time in Paris is expected to come to an end despite the club’s Ligue 1 title triumph, with the club’s disappointing Champions League exit having made a departure likely this summer.

Reports this week have suggested that Antonio Conte would be open to the idea of leaving Spurs for PSG this summer, with concerns from the Italian over the North London side’s ability to compete at the top end of the Premier League.

Conte’s immediate future will depend on the backing he receives from Daniel Levy and the club’s ability to bring in the additions required could yet hinge on whether Champions League football is secured for next season.

The 52-year-old has won five league titles across his last seven full seasons in management and has suggested on more than one occasion that simply fighting for a position in the top four does not align with his own ambitions.

Spurs have shown improvement since Conte’s arrival and will hope he remains committed to the project, but the prospect of interest from PSG – a side with huge resources and an almost guarantee of silverware each season – could prove tempting.

The Athletic are reporting that Pochettino’s expected exit and Conte’s interest in PSG has opened up the prospect of a swapping of roles, with the former an ‘obvious’ candidate for the position should a vacancy open up at Tottenham.

Pochettino is said to have been ‘seriously tempted’ by a return to Spurs last summer after the success of his previous reign, before PSG prevented his departure, whilst the position at Manchester United, one which has been continually linked with, has since been given to Erik ten Hag.

The Argentine has also been linked with the Real Madrid job, though Carlo Ancelotti looks to continue in his role after steering the club to the bring of another La Liga title, while they are preparing for a Champions League semi-final against Manchester City.
