Jose Mourinho is said to be ‘very unlikely’ to leave Roma for PSG this summer following links with the French champions.
PSG are expected to sack Mauricio Pochettino in the coming days with Sporting Director Leonardo also set to be given the chop as the club look to finally get their hands on a much-coveted maiden Champions League crown.
The French side made it to the final in 2020 before being beaten by Bayern Munich in the Lisbon showpiece, before being dumped out by Man City at the semi-final stage in 2021, and being knocked out at the last 16 stage by eventual winners, Real Madrid, this season.
The Ligue 1 champions are on the verge of appointing Luis Campos as their new sporting director, and his first job is expected to be to fire Mauricio Pochettino, with reports in recent days suggesting the Parisien side will target Jose Mourinho as his replacement – with Campos having worked with the former Chelsea and Man Utd boss during his time in charge at Real Madrid.
Mourinho’s fortunes have followed a downward trend in recent years, but he underlined his trophy-winning credentials by steering AS Roma to their first major European trophy in 61-years by beating Feyenoord in this year’s UEFA Europa Conference League final.
Despite the riches that would be available to the Portuguese if he were to move to PSG and take on yet another new league, according to the Times, Mourinho is ‘very happy’ in the Italian capital and will not ‘agitate’ for a move.
Speaking after claiming the Conference League trophy in Albania last month, Mourinho outlined his intention to stay with the Giallorossi.
“I’ve been at Roma for 11 months, I knew the moment I arrived what it meant to the people. They had been waiting for something like this,” he said following the Conference League win. “I am staying, there’s no doubt about that. We need to see what our owners, who are fantastic people, want to do next season because this is history, but we can build a special project. Now I’m going to go on holiday, sit on the beach and think about it all for a while.”
The Times say that Christophe Galtier, who worked with Campos in their title-winning season at Lille last year, as well as Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon, are among the alternatives to replace Pochettino.
