Manchester United are continuing to fight for the signature of in-demand striker Darwin Nunez despite Liverpool seemingly being on the verge of securing a deal for the Uruguayan forward.
The 22-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s most in demand attackers after impressing during Benfica’s run to the Champions League knockout stages and netted a hugely impressive 32 times in 40 starts for the Portuguese outfit this season.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is a known admirer of the 6ft 2in frontman and with Sadio Mane set to leave Anfield this summer it emerged yesterday that the Premier League runners up were prepared to smash their transfer record to bring Nunez to England.
Manchester United are known to have lodged an interest in Nunez already this summer as they look to rebuild under new boss Erik Ten Hag and according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano the Red Devils have not given up hope of signing the striker despite Liverpool currently being in pole position.
Darwin Núñez deal. Key hours ahead as reported, waiting for key stages as Liverpool are in advanced talks with Benfica on €80m verbal bid and personal terms [five year deal] already discussed.
…but Manchester United are in contact with his agent, even today afternoon ⤵️ https://t.co/AGvDtMgzBg

While Nunez is said to be intrigued by United’s offer he has made it clear that his preference is to move to Anfield to link up with Klopp and Liverpool have let Benfica know that they have no desire to get into a bidding war with their bitter rivals.
While United’s continued push is certainly an interesting development and stranger things have happened in football, the smart money remains on Nunez wearing the Red of Liverpool when the Premier League season begins in August.
