Boost for Man United as Spurs stall on Eriksen interest

Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Christian Eriksen with Tottenham having stalled on their interest in the club’s former midfielder.

United are keen on a deal to sign Eriksen on a free transfer as his short-term contract with Brentford comes to an end, with Erik ten Hag having identified the 30-year-old as a signing who can help improve his midfield.

The Denmark international starred after signing a six-month deal with Brentford in January, inspiring the Bees to seven wins from 11 games during the season’s run-in to secure Premier League survival.

His remarkable return came just months after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, with the midfielder since fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to allow his safe return to the sport.

Eriksen’s immediate impact at Brentford has now seen several sides consider a summer approach and United’s hopes of securing his signing have been given a boost.

football.london are reporting that Spurs have not yet followed up their initial interest in Eriksen, who spent six-and-a-half seasons with the north Londoners before joining Inter Milan in 2020.

Antonio Conte – who managed the midfielder in Italy – discussed the prospect of Eriksen returning earlier in the season, but Spurs have so far failed to follow up that interest despite huge competition for his signature.

United have been joined by Everton, Newcastle, Leicester and West Ham in making contact with Eriksen, whilst Brentford have not given up hope of persuading the Dane to extend his contract. There is also interest from another of his former sides, Ajax, and one unnamed La Liga club.

Eriksen is understood to be settled in London, though will consider all available options before deciding on his next move and spoke on his desire to play Champions League football earlier in the campaign.
