Rooney set for MLS return following Derby exit

Wayne Rooney is set to return to Major League Soccer have reached an agreement to become the new manager of DC United.

Rooney stepped down as manager of Derby County last month following the club’s relegation to League One, but is nearing an immediate return to management with his former side.

 

The 36-year-old spent two seasons with DC United as a player after signing from Everton in 2018, scoring 25 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions.

The MLS side are now keen to bring Rooney back to the club in a management role, after the dismissal of head coach Hernan Losada.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that a contract is in place for Rooney to return to America, though his appointment will not be confirmed until the former England captain has acquired the necessary visa for the role.

Rooney impressed during his first role in management at Derby despite the club’s relegation, with the Rams competing for Championship safety despite a 21-point deduction and financial restrictions.

He was linked with the vacant role at Everton in January, but turned down an interview with his former side to focus on Derby’s survival bid.
