United reach ‘full agreement’ for Lisandro Martinez

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Lisandro Martinez after reaching a ‘full agreement’ with Ajax over a deal for the defender.

United have agreed a package worth up to €55m (£46m) for Martinez, who is expected to sign five-year deal with the club after productive talks between the sides on Wednesday.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that an announcement is now imminent and Martinez could join the rest of the squad on their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

United next face Crystal Palace in Melbourne on Tuesday, before a meeting with Aston Villa in Perth, where Martinez will hope to be included.

Arsenal were also interested in a deal to sign the 24-year-old, but the presence of Erik ten Hag is understood to have been a deciding factor in Martinez’s decision.

Predominantly a left-side central defender, he has also featured at left-back and in midfield for Ajax and his versatility will be a welcome addition at Old Trafford.

The centre-back was named as Ajax’s Player of the Season after winning the Eredivisie title under Ten Hag last season and made 120 appearances across his three seasons in Amsterdam.

Martinez will become the club’s second signing of the summer, following the arrival of left-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord. United are also working on deals to sign free agent Christian Eriksen and Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
