Pep Guardiola insists it’s early days in the Premier League title race despite Manchester City’s early advantage over Liverpool.
City have started the season with back-to-back wins to move top of the Premier League table, four points ahead of last season’s runners-up Liverpool who have began the campaign with successive draws.
Guardiola’s side travel to Newcastle this weekend looking to extend their perfect record, and speaking ahead of the clash, the Spaniard has talked down the club’s early lead and insists it is far too early to be discussing the title race.
“It’s very early days. I’m sorry but after two fixtures we can not make any plans about the future. We play Newcastle. Respect to all the other teams we will try to improve our game and win the game,” he told his pre-match press conference.
“It’s just two Premier League games. We have a long ways to training, we start the next month we try to improve our principles, our game. The best way to see that is in the games. First two games really good. Now we have to continue that game.
“Liverpool is not my business. This is Manchester City.”
Guardiola also discussed Erling Haaland’s adaptation. The forward marked his debut with two goals at West Ham on the opening weekend, but was often isolated in week’s 4-0 win over Bournemouth at the Etihad.
The Norwegian had just eight touches against the Cherries, but Guardiola is confident Haaland will continue to improve as he adjusts to life at City.
“We are delighted with Erling. It’s just a question of time, making connections. Games, games, games.”
