Thomas Tuchel has explained why it is difficult for Chelsea to replace N’Golo Kante with the midfielder facing another spell on the sidelines.
Kante limped off with a hamstring problem during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham earlier this month and is facing a minimum of a month out with the issue.
Conor Gallagher and Jorginho started in midfield at Leeds last weekend, but the duo struggled as Chelsea crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Elland Road.
The France international’s extended absence is a major blow for Chelsea, who face Leicester in the Premier League this weekend. Tuchel discussed Kante’s fitness issues and explained why the midfielder’s ‘unique’ skillset is difficult to replace.
”It’s difficult to replace him, he’s very unique,” Tuchel told his pre-match press conference.
”We were full of hope for the pre-season because we built it very individual. He felt very, very strong and that he had enough rest and build-up to be the player he can be. We started with one game a week and the hope was that he could play for us.
”We have trust in our players so it will be the same system. We have played many games without him in the structure but we understand the challenge. To change completely because N’Golo isn’t there, I don’t think so.”
