‘Did he really say that?’ – Klopp responds to Boehly’s North v South All-Star suggestion

Jurgen Klopp has laughed off Todd Boehly’s suggestion of a Premier League All-Star game and questioned where the fixture would take place in an already congested fixture schedule.

The new Chelsea owner has been giving his views and has suggested the Premier League takes an American route with an All-Star game between the North and South, in an event that would raise funds for the rest of the English footballing pyramid.

Klopp was asked for his opinion on the concept following Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Ajax and questioned the need for additional games in an already packed schedule. The German also debated whether the players and fans would get on board with the concept, given the tribalistic nature of English football rivalries.

“He doesn’t hesitate, he doesn’t wait long! Oh great!” Klopp said during his post-match press conference.

“When he finds a date for that he can call me! He forgets that in the big sports in America these players have four-month breaks so they’re quite happy to do a little bit of sport in these breaks. It’s completely different in football.

“What can I say? Does he want to bring the Harlem Globetrotters as well and let them play against a football team?

“I’m surprised by the question so please don’t judge my answers too much but maybe he can explain it to me at some point and find a proper date [for the match].

“I’m not sure too many people want to see that. Imagine that – Manchester United players, Liverpool players and Everton players all together in one team. It’s not a national team.

“Interesting game…and all the London guys together. Arsenal and Tottenham… did he really say that? Interesting…”
