Arteta calls on Arsenal to keep improving and claims only ‘robots’ can handle crazy fixture schedule

Mikel Arteta has called on Arsenal to keep improving and claims only ‘robots’ can handle the congested fixture schedule.

Arsenal are top of the Premier League after a brilliant start to the season and take on Liverpool this weekend in a tough assignment at the Emirates.

Arteta’s side have won seven of their eight league games to date and sit a point above Manchester City at the top of the division.

The Gunners produced an impressive performance to beat Tottenham 3-1 in the north London derby last weekend, but Arteta insists that there is still much room for improvement from his developing squad.

“I am very conscious that we can get much better than where we are today and we have to do better to be the team we want to be and the challenge is to be able to do that every three days,” Arteta told his pre-match press conference.

“You always see the weaknesses you want to improve.”

Arsenal face a hectic fixture schedule in the lead up to the winter World Cup, with this weekend’s clash with Liverpool the third of nine fixtures in October alone. In total, the Gunners will face 11 fixtures in just 38 days from the Liverpool game until the break for Qatar and Arteta criticised the demands placed on players.

“We know the fixtures we have been given have no precedence because of the World Cup. Every team is different, every squad is different. If you get injuries it makes the situation much worse.

“If you have robots who can play every three days life is much easier. It is something we have to experience and taste because at the moment we don’t know how it’ll play out.”
