Graham Potter has backed Steven Gerrard to come through a difficult period at Aston Villa, ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Villa Park this weekend.
Gerrard is coming under increasing pressure following a disappointing start to the season at Villa, who are 16th in the Premier League after just two wins from nine games.
Villa were 16th in the division when Gerrard replaced Dean Smith as manager almost 11 months ago and there has been little sign of tangible progress during his reign so far.
Chelsea could increase the scrutiny on Gerrard’s position with a win at Villa Park this weekend, but ahead of the clash Potter has offered support to the under-fire Villa boss and insists that things can change quickly in the Premier League.
“The margins are very small in the Premier League – I’m sure Steven will want to improve their results,” Potter told his pre-match press conference.
“If they had beaten Forest they would have gone above Liverpool so that shows you how quick things change.
“There’s always somebody under pressure in the Premier League and at the moment it’s Steven.”
