Diogo Jota a doubt for the World Cup after calf injury

Diogo Jota faces a race to be fit for the World Cup after sustaining a calf injury during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

The forward was substituted during the closing stages of the Reds’ victory at Anfield and departed the pitch on a stretcher after falling to the turf in pain.

Jota is set to undergo a scan on Monday in a bid to discover the extent of the issue and there are fears that the forward’s participation at the World Cup is now in serious doubt.

The 25-year-old has scored ten goals in 29 appearances for Portugal, who will take on Ghana, Uruguay and South Korea at the finals which begin next month.

The news will also come as a huge blow to Liverpool, who face seven fixtures in a congested schedule before the Premier League season pauses for the World Cup in Qatar.

Jurgen Klopp’s side next take on West Ham in the Premier League at Anfield on Wednesday evening, before a home clash with Nottingham Forest this weekend.
