Potter discusses Sterling form and Chelsea ‘balance’

Graham Potter has opened up on Raheem Sterling’s recent form and his attempts to find ‘balance’ in the Chelsea side.

Chelsea remain unbeaten in eight games across all competitions since Potter’s arrival as manager, but have struggled for consistent chance creation and have scored just once from open play across their past three fixtures.

Sterling has struggled for end product in recent weeks with the England international without a goal or assist in five appearances. The 27-year-old has scored just four goals in 14 appearances since his summer arrival from Manchester City.

Sterling has been used in various roles this season, having began the season at centre-forward under Thomas Tuchel. He has returned to a more familiar wide role under Potter’s management, who has also experimented with the winger at wing-back.

Speaking to Chelsea’s club website, Potter discussed Sterling’s form and insists his focus is on the team – and not individuals – as he looks to find solutions and balance in the final third.

“It’s something we have to look at not by zooming into one person but as a team,” Potter said.

“We can do better, but if we do better as a team then individuals will benefit from that so that’s where the work is.

“Raheem has the flexibility, ability and quality to play in a number of positions. It’s not straightforward with us losing the players we have so we’re trying to constantly find the right balance and the right solutions but he can help us in a number of positions.”
