Gareth Southgate names England squad for 2022 World Cup

Gareth Southgate has named his England squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

England will travel to the tournament among the favourites for success and begin their campaign against Iran on November 21, before also facing the United States and Wales in Group B.

Southgate has confirmed his 26-man squad for the tournament, which includes Leicester midfielder James Maddison. The 25-year-old has not been capped since his debut in 2019, but a sustained run of impressive form for the Foxes has earned Maddison his place in the squad.

Harry Kane will captain the side in Qatar, with the forward joined by Newcastle’s Callum Wilson and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford among Southgate’s forward options. Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham are the notable omissions at centre-forward.

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is also included despite failing to make an appearance during September’s international fixtures. Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips and Kyle Walker have also won their race to be included following fitness doubts over the duo.
