Chelsea’s move for Christopher Nkunku has been described as ‘well and truly closed’.
Nkunku has emerged as one of the hottest properties in Europe following his exploits with RB Leipzig, having registered 33 goal involvements (20 goals, 13 assists) in 34 Bundesliga outings last season. He has began the current campaign in similar form with 12 goals in 15 league games.
The France international only signed a new deal with the German club in June as they looked to fend off interest in his services and keep him at the Red Bull Arena until 2026.
However, according to Le10 Sport, that extension includes a release clause of €60 million (£52m), a figure that is set to be triggered by Chelsea next summer.
Nkunku’s agent, Pini Zahavi, is understood to have agreed terms with the Blues and the transfer is set to be completed on July 1st, with the article saying ‘everything is closed’ regarding the move to Stamford Bridge.
Nkunku was called up for France’s World Cup campaign in Qatar, but was forced to withdraw after sustaining an injury in training.
Les Bleus suffered a further blow after Karim Benzema was also ruled out of the tournament with a torn thigh muscle. The Ballon d’Or winner has withdrawn from the squad, though Didier Deschamps has opted against calling up a replacement.
