Technology giants Apple are reportedly interested in a takeover of Manchester United, after the Premier League side was put up for sale.
The Glazer family have announced their intention to bring in investment, either with the sale of shares or an outright takeover that would end their controversial reign at Old Trafford.
The club’s current owners have come under continued pressure from supporters to sell the Red Devils, with regular fan protests against their ownership.
The news that United are up for sale has alerted figures across the world and the Daily Star are reporting that Apple are considering an approach. Apple have no previous experience of owning a sport’s club of United’s scale, but are understood to keen to explore the prospect.
Should a takeover be completed, it would provide United with staggering level of resources given the success of the tech company, which is the largest in the world and brings in an annual revenue of £326 billion.
Apple’s interest comes amid rumours linking Sir Jim Ratcliffe, regarded as Britain’s richest man, with a bid to purchase the club.
Ratcliffe made an attempt to buy Chelsea last summer and is understood to be a boyhood fan of Manchester United.
The likes of Facebook and Amazon have also been linked with buying United, as well as investment funds in the Middle East.
