Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has committed to a redevelopment of Stamford Bridge, abandoning plans for a move to a new stadium.
The west Londoners have been considering plans to move their stadium facilities in line with the Premier League’s top clubs, with Stamford Bridge’s current capacity of just under 42,000 significantly smaller than each of the division’s other ‘Big Six’ clubs.
Chelsea had considered a move to a new location and the construction of a 60,000 seater stadium in Earl’s Court, but the club’s ownership have now decided on an expansion project at their current home.
According to the Mail, the Blues are looking to obtain planning permission for the expansion of Stamford Bridge within the next 12 months.
The ownership’s decision was released in a statement, confirming the plans of the American investors to remain at their historical home.
The shareholder group that owns the London club’s stadium freehold, Chelsea Pitch Owners, said: “The new owners have committed to redevelopment of the stadium.
“So it is anticipated the group’s workload will increase as this project begins to take shape.”
