Chelsea are set to compete with Liverpool for the signing of Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer.
Liverpool are understood to be preparing an approach for Nunes as the club look to improve their midfield options, having tracked the 24-year-old before his move from Sporting Lisbon to Wolves last summer.
The Reds were interested in a deal at that time and will renew their interest at the end of the season in a transfer expected to cost around £44m.
However, the Telegraph are reporting that Chelsea have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Nunes as the west London side chase midfield reinforcements of their own.
Jorginho is out of contract this summer and expected to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, while N’Golo Kante is also approaching the end of his deal and has missed much of the campaign with a hamstring issue.
Nunes has been placed on Chelsea’s shortlist of midfield targets, alongside West Ham captain Declan Rice and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo. Graham Potter’s side are also considering a move for Everton’s Amadou Onana this month, while negotiations for Enzo Fernandez could be resumed with Benfica.
Chelsea made an approach for Fernandez earlier this month, but saw talks break down after a refusal to meet the midfielder’s £106m release clause.
