Arteta pleased after ‘positive’ January window for Arsenal

Mikel Arteta says he is pleased with Arsenal’s business in January after a ‘positive’ transfer window for the club.

Arsenal strengthened their title challenge with three new additions during the winter window, securing deals for Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior and Jorginho to add depth in key areas.

The Gunners also allowed several out-of-favour names to leave on loan in search of more regular minutes and Arteta admits the mid-season market can be ‘tricky’ to navigate.

However, the Spaniard believes the window was ‘really positive’ for Arsenal, who continue their push for the title at Everton this weekend.

“It was a really tricky one, but in the end really positive. We had three key areas we wanted to improve, and got players at a great level,” he told his pre-match press conference.

“Sambi [Albert Sambi Lokonga] needs time to develop, and we have found the right club. Marquinhos, it will be a really good test for him, and Cedric was demanding minutes. It was difficult to let him go but we have to respect his wishes to play.”

Arsenal’s move for Jorginho came as a surprise, as the Gunners sealed a deadline day deal for the Chelsea midfielder. The 31-year-old was out of contract at the end of the season and Arteta discussed the club’s decision to add experience with a cut-price deal for the Italian.

“We knew in this market you have to adapt and be flexible. You need great characters, leadership in positions. I don’t think it was that late, but it was very close to the deadline.

“His intelligence, his personality and leadership skill, he understands our way of playing. He fits really well with what I want to do.

“You have to adapt to the circumstances you have, and now we have improved the squad.”
