De Gea bemoans officials’ consistency after Casemiro red

David de Gea has called for greater consistency from Premier League officials after Casemiro was sent off in Manchester United’s goalless draw with Southampton.

United were held to a draw by the struggling Saints after Casemiro’s red card left Erik ten Hag’s side with a man disadvantage for nearly an hour at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian was given his marching orders after a high challenge on Carlos Alcaraz, with the midfielder now facing a four-game suspension following a second dismissal of the season.

His absence is a major blow to the Red Devils, who will be without the influential star for next weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final with Fulham and their next three Premier League fixtures, including the trip to face top four rivals Newcastle.

De Gea discussed the result with Sky Sports at full-time and was critical of the inconsistency shown by Premier League officials this season.

“It should be a game to win today but the game changed when we lost a man in the team,” the United goalkeeper said.

“We tried our best to score but it was difficult. They had some chances but in the end we showed good team spirit. We have to take the point and keep going.

“I think Casemiro was unlucky. He tried to touch the ball and his foot came up high. I think the referees need to show more consistency. Sometimes they show a red card and sometimes they don’t.

“It’s going to be tough, he’s a big player. We will miss him for four games but we have a big squad. We have players coming from the bench who do well. We will keep working hard.”
