Man City have ‘genuine interest’ in Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell

Manchester City are understood to have a ‘genuine interest’ in signing Ben Chilwell from Chelsea this summer.

Pep Guardiola wants to sign a left-back this summer after the decision to allow Oleksandr Zinchenko and Joao Cancelo leave the club in recent windows and the Premier League champions are considering an approach for Chilwell.

Chelsea are expected to make sales at the end of the season as the west Londoners look to reduce their bloated squad, while the absence of Champions League football could lead to further sales as the big-spending Blues look to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.

Chilwell is not among those anticipated to leave, but The Athletic are reporting that his sale cannot be ruled out amid ‘genuine interest’ from the Etihad. The 26-year-old could command a large fee and would add a recognised senior option to City’s left-back stocks, with Guardiola having used the likes of central defender Nathan Ake and teenager Rico Lewis in the role this season.

Chilwell recently returned to the Chelsea side after a period on the sidelines and has endured several fitness issues during his three seasons at Stamford Bridge. He has made just 76 appearances in all competitions since his £50m arrival from Leicester in 2020, but has been a key performer when in the side.

The defender scored the opening goal as Chelsea won 3-1 at former club Leicester at the weekend, securing a third consecutive win in all competitions.
