Chelsea linked with move for Inter Milan goalkeeper

Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana as the club target a new number one this summer.

Graham Potter wants to sign a goalkeeper during the summer transfer window with neither Kepa Arrizabalaga or Edouard Mendy having convinced the head coach.

 

Chelsea are keen to offload each of their current goalkeepers to raise funds and sign a new first choice, with Fichajes reporting that Onana has been placed on the club’s shortlist of potential replacements.

The Cameroon international signed for Inter Milan on a free transfer from Ajax last summer and has impressed since replacing long-term number one Samir Handanović at the San Siro.

Onana leads the Champions League for clean sheets and saves this season and was excellent as Inter shut-out Porto over two legs to reach the competition’s quarter-finals.

The 26-year-old fits the profile of player Potter is keen to sign, as he looks for a goalkeeper who is comfortable in possession and with excellent distribution skills.

Chelsea could offer Edouard Mendy to the Italian side in part-exchange, with the Senegalese shot-stopper having fallen out of favour since a strong debut season in west London, in which he was named as UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year and The Best FIFA Goalkeeper of 2021 as Chelsea won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel.
