Manchester United hold extensive talks with right-back Frimpong

Manchester United have held extensive talks over the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.

Frimpong is in demand after an excellent season for the Bundesliga side, in which the right-back has scored eight goals and laid on a further six assists in 26 league appearances.

Leverkusen are expecting summer interest in the defender, who was included in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Sport Bild are reporting that the Premier League’s leading clubs have all tracked Frimpong, with Manchester United having opened negotiations over a potential deal.

Leverkusen are understood to value the 22-year-old at around €50m and have began preparations for his exit with the signing of Arthur in a deal worth €7 million from club America Futebol Club. The 20-year-old made his debut for Brazil during March’s international break.

Frimpong spent nine seasons in the academy system at Manchester City, before departing for Celtic where he won a Scottish treble in 2019/20. He has made 83 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen since his arrival in January 2021 and was named in the Bundesliga’s Team of the Season last season.

His arrival could allow Aaron Wan-Bissaka to depart in search of regular first-team football with the right-back having made just eight Premier League starts this season.
