Chelsea contact Mourinho about Stamford Bridge return

Chelsea have reportedly made contact with Jose Mourinho about returning to the club as manager.

Chelsea’s co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have discussed their desire to conduct a ‘thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach’ to replace Graham Potter and have began negotiations with various candidates.

Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique and Antonio Conte have all been named as options for Chelsea, while Relevo are reporting that the west Londoners have made contract with former manager Mourinho.

Mourinho won three Premier League titles across his two previous spells at Stamford Bridge and is currently in charge of Roma. He was the first appointment of the Roman Abramovich era and led the club to back-to-back league titles, before returning for a second spell in 2013 and winning a third Premier League crown.

However, the 60-year-old’s future at the Italian side is uncertain with the club having not proposed an extension to his deal that expires in 2024.

Mourinho won the Europa Conference League last season and Roma are in contention for Champions League qualification during the current campaign, but there is understood to have been friction with the board over new signings.

Mourinho is also understood to have received a record-breaking proposal from Saudi Arabia, one which would see the Portuguese become the highest paid manager in world football.

Frank Lampard has been named as interim manager until the end of the season as Chelsea conduct their recruitment process.
