Tuchel believes Bayern ‘slight underdog’ ahead of Man City clash

Thomas Tuchel believes Bayern Munich are a ‘slight underdog’ ahead of the club’s Champions League quarter-final clash with Manchester City.

Bayern travel to face the Premier League champions in the first leg of their quarter-final tie on Tuesday, in a clash that will see two of the tournament favourites go head-to-head at the Etihad.

The fixture will see Tuchel come up against Pep Guardiola once again, having beaten Guardiola’s side to win the Champions League at Chelsea in 2021.

Tuchel does not believe that past encounters will have any bearing on this week’s meeting however, and believes the Bundesliga side will begin as slight underdogs against a Manchester City team who have won eight consecutive games in all competitions.

“I don’t think I can learn much from other games I’ve played against Pep,” he said at his pre-match press conference.

“It’s unique what Pep does. We’ll try to find solutions but we’ll need a complete performance to create problems for City.

“It is a major task in front of us. I was just outside [at Etihad Stadium] and that is the current gold standard for us.

“We want to live up to that but the team is entitled to be confident after our results and performances in the Champions League so far and we have to try to continue like that.

“Maybe we play in a role of slight underdog, which is not a problem. We’ll try to make the most of it. We need to be confident and on top of our game.”
