Appreciating the last six English players to score 20+ goals in a PL season

Ivan Toney celebrated a milestone moment last weekend as the Brentford forward scored his 20th goal of the Premier League season.

Toney has continued to fire during a rapid rise through the divisions and has now scored 20+ goals in a season in League One, the Championship and the Premier League across the last four campaigns.

Only two players have outscored the 27-year-old in the top-flight this season and Toney has become just the sixth English player to reach 20+ goals in a Premier League campaign across the last 10 seasons.

Here is every player to have achieved the feat.

Daniel Sturridge (2013/14)

Daniel Sturridge produced the best form of his career during a brilliant 2013/14 season at Liverpool, one which saw the forward form a formidable partnership with Luis Suarez.

Liverpool’s ‘SAS’ scored 52 league goals between them to fire an unexpected title challenge for Brendan Rodgers’ side, with Sturridge scoring 21 goals as the duo dovetailed in devastating fashion.

Sturridge – signed from Chelsea in a £12m deal in January of the previous season – was twice named as the Premier League Player of the Month during a campaign in which he sparkled alongside Suarez for the division’s runners-up.

He became, at that time, just the second player in Premier League history to score in eight consecutive league matches and was shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award at the season’s end.

Fitness issues prevented Sturridge from recapturing those heights in the following seasons and he scored just 19 more league goals for Liverpool before his departure in 2019.

Iconic Duos: Suarez and Sturridge – Liverpool’s ‘SAS’

Harry Kane (2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2020/21 and 2022/23)

Harry Kane continues to chase, and break, goalscoring records.

Since bursting onto the scene with a 21-goal season in 2014/15, the Tottenham forward has fired at a phenomenal rate in the Premier League.

This season the 29-year-old became just the third player to score 20+ goals in six or more seasons, while he also joined Alan Shearer as the only players to have recorded 25+ Premier League goals in four different campaigns.

Kane is now the joint-second highest goalscorer in Premier League history (208) and is chasing down Shearer’s divisional record (260) and further goalscoring immortality. Having already become Tottenham and England’s record goalscorer in recent months, the Premier League benchmark is now the focus for the three-time Golden Boot winner.

Jamie Vardy (2015/16, 2017/18 and 2019/20)

Jamie Vardy has reached 20 goals in a Premier League season on three occasions for Leicester, a remarkable feat for a footballer who did not make his top-flight debut until the age of 27.

Vardy’s goals fired Leicester to an incredible Premier League title triumph in 2015/16, as the Foxes – among the pre-season relegation favourites – stunned the sport to be crowned champions for the first time in their history.

Vardy’s goals included a record-breaking 11 consecutive Premier League matches with a goal, breaking the previous record held by Manchester United’s Ruud van Nistelrooy.

He also scored 20 league goals during the 2017/18 campaign and 23 times during the 2019/20 season, the latter return earning Vardy the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

Danny Ings (2019/20)

Danny Ings was one of three English players to reach 20+ goals during the 2019/20 season, as the Southampton forward ended the campaign as runner-up for the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

After fitness issues prevented Ings from making an impact at Liverpool, he signed for Southampton on loan for the 2018/19 season before a permanent switch to St Mary’s.

His first full season after signing that latter deal saw Ings score 22 goals in the Premier League, form which ensured Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side climbed clear of relegation fears.

No player scored a higher percentage of their team’s overall goals than Ings (51%), who was named as the Saints’ Player of the Season and earned an England recall almost five years after his debut in 2015. He scored his first international goal in his third appearance for the Three Lions with an overhead kick against Wales.

Raheem Sterling (2019/20)

Raheem Sterling produced his best return in a Premier League season during the 2019/20 campaign, as the Manchester City winger reached 20 goals in the division for the first time.

Sterling had won the FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year awards as Man City won a domestic treble the previous season, before improving his goal record the following year.

Sterling opened the season with a hat-trick on the opening weekend and scored a second treble at Brighton later in the season. The England international also scored a hat-trick during a 5-0 win over Atalanta in Europe and was named in the Champions League’s Squad of the Season.

He ended the campaign with 31 goals across all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Ivan Toney (2022/23)

Ivan Toney has become just the sixth English player to score 20+ goals in a Premier League season across the last decade, reaching the landmark after scoring a free-kick in Brentford’s 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

It has been a phenomenal season from the forward, whose form earned the 27-year-old an England debut during March’s Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Toney has now scored 32 goals in just 65 top-flight appearances for a Brentford side who have continued to punch above their weight in the Premier League.

His continued excellence around goal is expected to lead to transfer interest this summer and the Bees could face a fight to keep hold of their leading scorer.
