Chelsea are reportedly ‘close’ to concluding their search for a new manager.
It has been a truly dismal season for Chelsea, with new owner Todd Boehly having fired Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel after just five league games, while his replacement, Graham Potter , was unable to instil his ideas into his massively bloated squad.
Potter was sacked over a month ago with Frank Lampard brought back to the club in an interim role, though the former midfielder lost his first six games in charge.
Such has been the club’s struggles this season, their 3-1 win over Bournemouth at the weekend finally confirmed that they were mathematically safe from relegation, although such a scenario was never realistically on the cards.
Ever since Potter’s sacking on April 3rd, a number of managers have been linked with the vacant position, including Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, Ruben Amorim, Vincent Kompany and Mauricio Pochettino.
Naglesmann appeared to be the early front-runner for the role, though suddenly ruled himself out, with former Spurs boss Pochettino now appearing to be the favoured candidate.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea are now edging closer to finalising the process, which they say ‘could be concluded this week’.
They say a ‘final decision is set to be made in the days ahead’, although an announcement will follow ‘in due course’.
The report confirms that Pochettino is the ‘strong favourite’ for the role, the Argentine having been out of work for 12 months since leaving PSG at the end of last season.
