Spurs join the race to sign former Arsenal midfielder

Tottenham have joined the race to sign former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi from Marseille.

Guendouzi is attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs and is expected to leave Marseille this summer, with Aston Villa, West Ham and Newcastle among the sides credited with interest in the France international.

Get French Football News are reporting that Villa are leading the chase for Guendouzi and have an advantage due to the presence of former Arsenal manager Unai Emery and ex-Marseille teammate Boubacar Kamara at Villa Park, but could now face competition from Spurs.

The north Londoners want to improve their midfield options and are considering an approach for the 24-year-old, who is valued at around €32m at the The Stade Vélodrome. Guendouzi formed part of the France squad that reached the World Cup final in Qatar last winter, but has seen his role reduced at Marseille in recent weeks.

The midfielder has started just one of the club’s last five Ligue 1 fixtures as Marseille close in on Champions League qualification.

Guendouzi made 82 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal, but was allowed to leave after a fall-out with manager Mikel Arteta. He spent time on loan at Hertha Berlin and Marseille before signing for the latter in a permanent deal worth £9m last summer.
